Client
The client is a start-up manufacturing and distribution company based in Michigan. It produces a broad selection of carbon and alloy seamless steel tubing.
Situation
Newco, a company with no employees, hires STHRM, Inc. to develop and implement HR processes.
Solution
STHRM, Inc. acted as the Interim Director, Human Resources.
Results
Wrote and developed salaried, non-exempt, and union production employee position descriptions to determine skills, competencies and education requirement.
Developed and trained supervisory employees on interview techniques and hired a total of 100 salaried, non-exempt and production employees in three months.
Developed and initiated employment processes for salaried, non-exempt, and production employees, which included manpower planning, requisition processes, skill assessments (math, problem solving and reading comprehension), and sales assessments, interview analysis forms, local records checks, former employer reference checks and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening prior to employment.
Wrote and prepared employment offer letters for salaried, non-exempt and union production workers and a Non-Disclosure and Non-Competition Agreement for key employees to sign.
Wrote and implemented a relocation program for professional employees.
Teamed with Michigan Works and Michigan Talent Bank to assess union production workers’ math, problem-solving and reading comprehension skills and source qualified candidates for employment.
Collaborated with Oakland County Economic Development Council (EDC) to complete MST submission and received $9 million economic development bond for renovations and improvements to the facility and new equipment.
Partnered with CFO to develop health insurance, prescription drug, dental, group life insurance, Section 125 plan, short-term disability, long-term disability and 401(k) retirement benefit programs for union production and salaried employees.
Developed and conducted new employee benefits and company policy orientations.
Developed and wrote, employee handbook and various HR policies to include Emergency Site Plan and RCRA Contingency Plan.
Briefed board of directors on start-up accomplishments and five-year strategic and operational HR plans.
Prepared internal communication plan for CEO to establish the company’s new culture.
Wrote news releases and employee communication newsletter.
Developed and implemented a first shipment ceremony inviting local news media; state, county and local government officials; and union, banking, insurance, trucking businesses that had a hand in making the start-up successful.
